Until recently, embedded computing was a niche discipline, but it is now part of standard industrial practice. The increasing sophistication of embedded applications ismatched by new demands on system performance, especiallyreal-time, and on both interoperability and developmentprocess. In this note, I will describe some of the challengesand some new applications for real-time outside traditionalareas.
