A new symmetric cryptosystem is presented, based on two-dimensional cellular automata. Enciphering uses both left- and right-toggle rules. Enhanced cryptographic power is obtained by designing some simple geometric transformations on squares of bits of information. As an application, a software system "IPI Protect" is presented which integrates with MS Word for protecting the documents against unauthorized modifications while allowing free viewing and printing.
