Abstract

In this talk we will survey some significant results, methods and trends in mathematical modeling, in an attempt to define some of the questions to be explored in this workshop. We are particularly concerned with the formal description of biological systems. The examples, however, will be primarily drawn from the mathematical literature. A large and counterproductive gap remains between mathematics and the other sciences. Certainly one goal of this workshop is to narrow that gap.
