Abstract

In the field of embedded systems design and specification,an emerging need is to be able to exploit the dynamicalreconfigurability of electronic devices such as the FPGAs.These devices potentially offer the ability to extend ormodify the functionality of a system during operation. Theset of applications that would benefit from such a possibilityis wide and includes signal and image processing, networkdevices, automotive systems. One of the main problemsin exploiting such a possibility is the lack of a formalismthat lets the designer model the reconfigurable behaviorin high-level system representations and then to implementit on logic devices. Our work aims at investigating the potentialityof object oriented language features in the developmentof digital systems with dynamically reconfigurablecomponents. In particular, we explore the implementationfeasibility of the implementation of a set of reconfigurablefunctions of the system, starting from a high level representationbased on the Java dynamic class loading semantics.
