JavaInJava is a Java virtual machine written in the JavaTM programming language. The system was built at SunMicrosystems Laboratories in order to examine the feasibility ofconstructing high-quality virtual machines using the Javaprogramming language and to experiment with new virtual machineimplementation techniques. In this paper we describe the overallarchitecture of JavaInJava and summarize a number of interestingtechnical issues that were encountered during its implementation.
