Abstract

In this paper, we will show the experimental analysis ofnetwork load propagation properties of Internet paths usingour IP performance active measurement method. Thismethod sends ICMP TIMESTAMP messages and receivesreply messages to and from each node along the path. Aftercollecting and analyzing the delay fluctuations and lossoccurrences, we extracted following results. First, delaysare classified two types, burst-type delays and cyclic delays.Second, burst-type delays caused by loads on intermediaterouters were propagated to each node throughoutthe path. Third, cyclic delays were peculiar to each nodeand had time intervals of 30 or 60 seconds. Fourth, ForwardTrip Time included cyclic delays and Backward TripTime included burst-type delays. Finally, scattered lossesoccurred along paths through one of the providers.
