Abstract

This paper describes the development of Metaria, aWeb metasearch engine designed to provide flexible andadaptive Web metasearching in mobile environments.Metaria employs an adaptive Web proxy system thatallows more efficient metasearching and allows users tospecify their information needs in detail, reducing theexcessive cost of retrieving irrelevant data andmetasearch results. By automatically detecting thecapabilities and the contextual information of clientdevices, Metaria can also reformat the presentation ofmetasearch results to best suit the limitations of the clientdevices or the user's preferences. It can further improvethe efficiency of metasearching by automaticallytransferring the metasearch results to clients.
