Abstract

Polygon meshes are ubiquitous in geometric modelrepresentation. Segmentation and parametrization ofarbitrary polygon meshes are closely related and crucialin many applications. The primary aim of this paper is tofind an efficient and practical way to segment andresample geometric models. We automatically generate atriangular patch network by a simplification algorithm. Asimple and cheap algorithm is put forward for calculatingthe approximate shortest path between two points ontriangle mesh, which serves for patch boundary of thesegmentation. A set of interactive tools provides users withmore freedom to control the final segmentation. The meshparametrization algorithm in this paper can efficientlymap a disk topology mesh surface to an isomorphic planarmesh without fixing boundary points. Ways are alsoprovided to map the planar mesh with natural boundary tospecific parameter domain, e.g. square or circular domain. The proposed method can be used in diverse applications, such as patchwise freeform surfaces fitting,Multi-resolution analysis, texture mapping, remeshing ofarbitrary polygon mesh and blank design of sheet metalforming. Examples are included to demonstrate theefficiency and quality of our method.
