Abstract

We describe a new technique for the parameterizationof isosurfaces which result form the marching cubes (mc)algorithm. The motivation for the methods is based uponthe method of chord length parameterization for curves. The method of extending the concept of curveparameterization to isosurface parameterization is basedupon a relatively simple but very useful observation abouta subset of the edge topology of a mc produced isosurfacecalled the 4*-network. This is a collection of threemutually orthogonal planar polygons lying on andintersecting at the vertices of the isosurface. We illustratethe potential usefulness of this new parameterizationmethod with examples from geometric modeling andmedical imaging analysis.
