This paper introduces a modular and reconfigurablesoftware framework for protocol stacks implemented inplatform independent manner. Simulation tools useful forsoftware validations are introduced and a newdistributed, three-staged procedure for validation ofprotocol stack software is proposed. Assertion-basedvirtual prototyping (based on non-resident assertions),utilising simulation of hardware software co-systems aswell as software probes containing code-residentassertions are used in the proposed validation process.
