Abstract

This paper proposes an ad-hoc routing protocol usingunicast-based route discovery in a hybrid wireless network,ECCA, which combines ad-hoc networking scheme with acentralized hierarchical network. The network aims tocollect damage assessment information in disastercircumstances, maintaining connections between a basestation (BS) and nodes by way of multihopping. In theevent that a direct link between BS and a nodedisconnects, the node switches the mode from a cellular toan ad-hoc mode in order to access BS via neighboringnodes. A routing protocol proposed in this paper builds aroute by way of monitoring neighbors' communicationsinstead of broadcasting a route request packet.Experiments show that approximately 90% of nodes candiscover a route within a few hops, even if only 20% ofnodes are able to access BS directly. Even in a low nodedensity, the network is capable of transferring data withinthree hops.
