Abstract

This study explores using keywords to automaticallygenerate hyperlinks for large sets of reference materials.A content analysis was performed and the results indicatethat keywords seem to be closely associated withmanually generated hyperlinks. Two prototypes weredeveloped, differing in whether the keywords weremanually generated by the author, or mechanicallyextracted by an automatic process. In both prototypes, different types of intra-document and inter-document linkswere generated. A preliminary evaluation on the firstprototype (which was based on manually identifiedkeywords) shows that this prototype system holds promisefor further exploration. In the second prototype, keywordswere automatically extracted with Oracle Text gist/themegeneration tools. Although the automatically extractedkeywords were different from those identified by authors, there was a significant overlap between the set of linksgenerated by each prototype. The next step will be testingthe usefulness of this automatic approach with a thoroughuser evaluation.
