Abstract

We propose a new spherical parameterization algorithmfor general genus-zero surfaces that aims to control the areaand length distortions at the same time. Prior work eitherconsiders only the length distortion or applies only to volumetricsurfaces. Our algorithm starts from an initial parameterization, performs local and global smoothing stepsalternately to improve the mapping quality, and convergesto the solution. The local method minimizes the area distortionat a local submesh by solving a linear system aswell as controls the length distortion. The global methodattempts to reduce the area distortion by equalizing its distributionover the whole sphere. We perform experimentalstudies showing the effectiveness of the technique. Our newalgorithm has many applications in medical image analysis, computer vision, graphics and multimedia databases.
