Abstract

Transmission of video data through the Internet is atime critical application. The RTP protocol is commonlyused for sending and receiving multimedia [RFC 3016 - RTP Payload Format for MPEG-4 Audio/Visual Streams]. Associated with RTP we have the RTCP protocol [Real Time Control Protocol Extended Reports] and the RTP retransmission protocol [RFC 2026 - RTP Retransmission Payload Format] for ensuring a certain quality of service. RTP retransmission is an end to end protocol and hence the latency associated withretransmission is high. We propose an In-networksolution which uses network processors routers which canrequest for retransmission and also serviceretransmission requests. The amount of parallelismprovided by network processors would serve to reduce thepacket processing time. We have derived the expectednumber of paths traversed by a packet before it reachesthe client in our method and we also discussed the designof the router on the Intel IXP network processor
