Abstract

Traditional routing algorithms tend to use shortestpath algorithms with minimum hop count to reducetransmission latency and error rates, resulting in a quickexhaustion of a small subset of nodes where the trafficload is heavy and risking a disconnection of the entirenetwork. In this paper, we define a new power-aware costmetric with the aim of reflecting both power-savingperspectives: maximizing network lifetime and minimizingthe power consumption of a routing task. We alsopropose a new location-aided, power-aware routingprotocol that is based on a combination of greedy andmulticasting strategies. The decision on applying greedyor multicasting within its routing zone depends on the linkcost and the node's neighborhood distribution.Simulation results show that performances on networklifetime and average power consumption for routing tasksare greatly improved without sacrifices in the deliveryrate of the ad hoc network.
