Abstract

In this paper we illustrate problems encounteredtogether with proposed solutions when machinetranslation has to deal with languages with differentfamily origins. The languages chosen are ClassicalArabic, Mandarin Chinese and French. The machinetranslation architectures used are an adapted transfermethodology, and a "global" methodology in seven steps, which is new. What is common between the problemsencountered is semantics. If one wishes to have machinetranslation of high quality there are two issues that mustbe resolved. The first of these is the semantic aspect of thelinguistic units and the second is that the translationcalculus has to be adapted to the languages to beprocessed.
