Abstract

Recent innovations in real-time machine vision, distributed computing, software architectures, andencrypted high-speed networking are expanding theavailable technology for intelligent camera arrays onteleviewing and interactive applications. In this paper wedescribe research aimed at the realization of a powerfulteleviewing system using arrays of omnidirectionalcameras. The video arrays provide an interactive, real-time,multi-resolution televiewing interface to multiplepeople including physical security and emergencyresponse crews simultaneously. Security measures suchas authentication and network encryption areimplemented on multiple platforms. Fusion of high-resolutionrectilinear image over the omnidirectionalimage is also carried out. Computer vision techniquesbased on motion analysis are used for detectinginteresting events. The televiewing system is verified forthe performance as well as physically tested on the SuperBowl 2003 event for crowd detection and trafficmonitoring.
