Abstract

Bioinformatics is as a bridge between life science andcomputer science: computer algorithms are needed toface complexity of biological processes. Bioinformaticsapplications manage complex biological data stored intodistributed and often heterogeneous databases andrequire large computing power. We discuss requirementsof such applications and present the architecture ofPROTEUS, a Grid-based Problem Solving Environmentthat integrates ontology and workflow approaches toenhance composition and execution of bioinformaticsapplications on the Grid.
