This paper introduces a transport layer solution forbandwidth aggregation, based on extending Stream ControlTransmission Protocol (SCTP).The extended SCTP, which werefer to as Load-Sharing SCTP (LS-SCTP), is able toaggregate the bandwidth of the transmission paths betweenthe communicating endpoints. In addition, LS-SCTP candynamically add new paths to the bundle, as they becomeavailable. To insure that the transport connection does notstall due to the high loss rate or due to continuous failure ofindividual paths, LS-SCTP includes path monitoring andpacket assignment mechanisms. These mechanisms monitorthe paths and stripe the packets according to their condition.Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of ourproposed mechanism in providing throughput and reliabilityto mobile applications.
