The future generation of consumer electronics devicesis envisioned to provide automatic cooperation betweendevices and run applications that are sensitive to people'slikings, personalized to their requirements, anticipatoryof their behavior and responsive to their presence. We seethis 'Ambient Intelligence' as a key feature of futurepervasive computing. We focus here on one of thechallenges in realizing this vision: informationmanagement. This entails integrating, querying, synchronizing and evolving structured data, on aheterogeneous and ad-hoc collection of (mobile) devices.Rather than hard-coding data management functionalityin each individual application, we argue for adding high-leveldata management functionalities to the distributedmiddleware layer. Our AmbientDB P2P databasemanagement system addresses this by providing a globaldatabase abstraction over an ad-hoc network ofheterogeneous peers.
