Abstract

While we cannot make every student an expert on alltopics from the wireless channel to mobile applicationdesign, we can provide students with a criticalunderstanding of the context for their work in differentaspects of wireless systems. This paper describes thedesign and development of a hands-on course onwireless and mobile systems design offered at VirginiaTech, integrating topics in wireless networking andmobile computing. Students conduct laboratoryexperiments and design projects that cover a broadspectrum of issues (from co-channel interference andmedium access to routing and addressing, middlewaresupport and mobile application design) that directlyaffect mobile computing. We describe the structure ofthe course, outline lecture topics and hands-onexercises, and summarize student feedback to the firstoffering of the course.
