Abstract

Applications in the Pervasive Computing domainare challenged by the dynamism in which their executionenvironment changes, e.g. due to user mobility. As a result, applications have to adapt to changesregarding their required resources. In this paper wepresent PCOM, a component system for PervasiveComputing. PCOM offers application programmers ahigh-level programming abstraction which capturesthe dependencies between components using contracts. The resulting application architecture is a treeformed by components and their dependencies. PCOMsupports automatic adaptation in cases where the executionenvironment changes to the better or to theworse. User supplied as well as system providedstrategies take users out of the control loop while offeringflexible adaptation control.
