In distributed systems, transcoding techniques have beenused to customize multimedia objects, utilizing trade-offsbetween the quality and sizes of these objects to provide differentiatedservices to clients. Our research uses transcodingtechniques in wireless systems to customize videostreams to the requirements of users, while minimizingthe energy costs. We introduce an approach to dynamicallydetermine which transcoders to execute and whereto execute them (e.g., client or server). The goal is to selectappropriate transcoders (a) to provide clients with thequality of service they desire while (b) minimizing the energyconsumption of the end-hosts in accordance withapplication-specific global energy management directives. This paper investigates sample transcoder functionsfor video streaming on handheld devices and introducesa mechanism for selecting the most appropriatetranscoders and transcoder parameters.
