Abstract

An important challenge faced by many teachers as theyinvolve students in science investigations is measuring("assessing") students' progress. Our detailedrequirements analysis in a particular school districtled to the idea that teachers need ways to improve theinformation they have about what students know andcan do, not automation of typical assessment practices. We see handhelds as a promising for addressing thisneed because they can give students and teachersfrequent, integral access to new ways of expressingand communicating what they know and can do.
