Mobile technologies like mobile phones allow alearning community to combine classroom activitieswith simultaneous field explorations in an authenticenvironment. The collaboration between the twogroups can be enhanced by a technique calledCollaborative Concept Maps, based on SMSs (ShortMessage Service). This means that mobile technologyis used not just as a mediator (of learningactivity/collaboration) but as a trigger and platformthat includes guidance and support for learningmethods and the learning process. A formativeevaluation indicates that it is possible to constructcollaborative concept maps by mobile phones (usingSMSs) and combine simultaneous classroom learningactivity with mobile learning. In the conducted casestudy, the students in the forest sent their observations, represented as concept maps, as structured SMSs tothe students in the classroom. Our experience showsthat even light and easy techniques can make adifference in a learning setting, if they are carefullydesigned to fit the real users' context.
