This paper describes middleware---called Narnia---that helps programmers develop scalable, high-performance multimedia services. Narnia provides a foundation for control applications that manage multimedia servers and network devices. The foundation contains program modules that help programmers to build structured and flexible (changeable) applications. Narnia also contains modules that handle communication tasks for applications. Because Narnia handles communications for applications, it must perform input/output efficiently. This paper reports on some preliminary performance measurements, which show that Narnia-based applications could support thousands of simultaneous users.
