With the proliferation of XML as the lingua francaof internet information exchange, engineering XMLdocuments and maintaining their databases becomes amajor challenge. In this context, the use of XMLSchema to constrain and validate XML documentcontent is becoming a standard part of webinformation production. However, adoption of XMLSchema poses new problems; specifically, the difficultyin understanding even a relatively small schema due toits textual nature and XML syntax. This problem canbe addressed by use of a graphical modellinglanguage such as UML to document XML Schema andconforming XML document structure. This paperdiscusses the issues involved in representing XMLSchema using UML and presents a transformationapproach which is both comprehensive and thorough.
