In the first part of this paper we make a survey of data-driven control concepts and their relation to non-von-Neumann and parallel programming. We then introduce informally a high-level data flow language, PEP, which implements these concepts in a simple and clear form, bringing them closer to practical use by the programmers. The second part of the paper (to appear) will be a PEP programmer's manual which provides more formal description of the language.
