In 1969, the Business School of Georgia State University (GSU) initiated a new program of study leading to the degree Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS). The program has gone through a series of refinements in order to better fulfill its primary objective of developing business systems designers and information analysts who would be responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating computer based information systems in organizations. The lack of a model that may be used for constructing a suitable curriculum led the author to the development of a goal oriented approach for designing curricula. It provides a systematic way of designing a curriculum for an evolving multidimensional field like computer science. This paper describes the factors that led to the development of this approach and its practical advantages.
