Efficient use of network bandwidth is an important concern in wireless networks. The prevailing use of flooding for on-demand route discovery is bandwidth expensive and can lead to serious degradation in network performance particularly when there are large numbers of concurrent peer-to-peer communications. This chapter discusses techniques for optimizing bandwidth efficiency of route discovery and also explores some ideas for possible future research.
