Abstract

This chapter discusses Quality of Service (QoS) models for ad hoc wireless networks (also called Mobile Ad hoc Networks [MANETs]). After examining the features of MANETs and QoS models of the Internet, a Flexible QoS Model for MANETs (FQMM) is proposed. Salient features of FQMM include the dynamic roles of nodes and a hybrid provisioning policy that combines the fine-grained QoS of Integrated Service and service differentiation of Differentiated Service. A framework architecture to realize FQMM is discussed, and the functionalities of and the interreactions among its components are elaborated. By simulation, FQMM is evaluated against its performance in service prioritization and service differentiation in MANETs by implementing relevant components in the FQMM framework architecture.
