Abstract

We are developing an integrated, embodied conversational agent (ECA). In this paper we are focusing on the emotional module of the system, introducing its architecture, components and functioning. We are describing in details an application designed for mapping words and expressions into emotions and complex emotional structures. The emotional module of the ECA enables us to synthetize emotional states and calculate the emotional load of phrases easily, making it possible to generate emotional responses to user utterances, and opening the way to create synthetic personalities.
