For orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and block-based single-carrier transmission with cyclic prefix (SCCP), the joint channel estimation and data detection in the frequency-domain has been considered with the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm. While the computational complexity of the EM algorithm is reasonable in OFDM, it becomes prohibitively high in SCCP. Hence, we propose an approximate EM algorithm to reduce the complexity in this paper. It is shown that the channel estimation accuracy has been improved due to the joint processing and thereby the bit error rate (BER) is also improved.
