Abstract

The Semantic Web promises a machine-understandable description of the information on the Web. Before achieving this vision, however, researchers must address several challenges. Technologies are needed for integrating the data described in different ontologies as well as different types of data, and for recognizing when different objects at different sites denote the same real-world entity. In addition, systems must be able to efficiently query distributed information and to convert legacy data into more semantic representations such as RDF. The Building Finder application proposes a virtual approach to data integration in which the data remains at the original sites, as opposed to the warehouse approach, in which an integration site stores the extracted data.
