Abstract

COMMUNITY is a formal approach to software architecture. Its main characteristics are: a precise, yet intuitivemathematical semantics based on categorical diagrams; aclear separation between computation, coordination, anddistribution (including mobility); and a simple state-basedlanguage, inspired by Unity, to describe behaviour. This paperdiscusses the applicability of this approach to location-awaresystems through the modelling of the GSM handoverprotocol, namely the way communication with a moving cellularphone passes from one station to another. The casestudy was developed with the COMMUNITY Workbench,a tool that animates distributed and mobile architecturalmodels.
