Building efficient tools for the analysis andexploration of large execution traces can be a verychallenging task. Our experience with building a toolcalled SEAT (Software Exploration and Analysis Tool)shows that there is a need to address several key researchquestions in order to overcome these challenges.SEAT isintended to integrate several filtering techniques to tacklethe size explosion problem that make traces hard tounderstand. However, the incorporation of thesetechniques into one efficient tool raises many issues.Thispaper focuses on these issues and underlies futureresearch directions to advance the area of dynamicanalysis of large software systems.
