Abstract

We present an interactive technique for generatinghalftoning animations in image space. We specificallyconsider a halftoning approach that uses screening methodsto achieve shading, brightness, and texture by placingvarying patterns. Our technique transports the screeningpatterns in a frame-to-frame coherent manner accordingto the velocity of each fragment on the imageplane. We show how the algorithm is mapped toprogrammable graphics hardware to achieve interactiveframe rates. Our approach can be used for anyscreening-based halftoning technique, and therefore differentnon-photorealistic image-space rendering styles, includingdithering, screening, stippling, and hatching, canbe utilized to generate real-time frame-to-frame coherentanimations.
