In this paper we present a novel LOD basedrendering approach that integrates geometry basedand image based LOD mechanisms in one system. Weassume that every LOD object in the scene isrepresented by a textured polygonal mesh. In apreprocess we generate a continuous multiresolutionmodel for all LOD objects. During runtime we firstcheck for every LOD object if an appropriate cachedapproximation generated for former frames isavailable. If not, we extract a new suitableapproximation out of the objects continuousmultiresolution model depending on view-dependentcriteria. After that, we replace this adaptive geometry-basedapproximation by an image-based impostor ifthis is reasonable and efficient. The selectedapproximations of LOD objects are used for renderingthe next frame.
