This paper gives an overview of some of IBM's major JavaTM efforts and sets forth a structure that relates the individual Java efforts to one another. The paper describes IBM's overall approach toward Java and describes how IBM is exploiting Java to answer customer requirements in such areas as server platforms, reusable components, and tools. This paper will serve as an introduction to some of the other papers that are included in this issue of the IBM Systems Journal and that detail individual areas of IBM's focus on Java.
