The Personal Server: Changing the Way We Think about Ubiquitous Computing

Just as the World Wide Web has made content sharing and information management easier, Internet-enabled phones have made personal content sharing and information management a reality. This has led to the development of smart phones, which let users access data on the Web and send and receive email, among other things. But the mobile Internet is in its infancy, and mobile phones are quickly developing into more than just simple browser-enabled devices. New processors such as Texas Instrumentsý OMAP and multigigabyte microdrives are transforming phones into powerful storage processing units for personal data access and information management. As smart phones offer more options, driving new applications development, weýll need to establish appropriate new standards. Here, I review existing related standards, focusing on two missing features that fully autonomous phones will require.
