Abstract

This paper describes an IPv6 based protocol for localized mobility management in next generation wireless networks. The protocol exploits the hierarchical IPv6 addressing for location management and uses specialized mechanisms for handoff management. It eliminates packet redirection along correspondent node (CN) - mobile node (MN) path, rendering greater scalability and simplifying routing.Unlike other micromobility proposals, we take an end-to-end approach to micromobility by ensuring that MN packets arrive at topologically correct address from communicating nodes. We also discuss the low-latency handoff mechanism that is critical to support real-time applications in wide area networks as well as WLAN networks. Results from initial simulation experiments are also presented.
