Abstract

The intelligent space is a vision of a physical environment that acts intelligently to anticipate its occupants' needs and provide timely assistance. There are many problems to overcome before this can become a practical reality. We believe that one of the most significant problems is that of inferring the user's needs from observations of their behaviour. To this end, we have developed the xAssist framework as a vehicle to experiment with this inferencing process. By confining ourselves to the desktop environment, we are able to isolate and explore the issues involved in reasoning about user goals, and at the same time, produce applications that are immediately useful.
