Abstract

Mobile ad-hoc peer-to-peer (p2p) networks will be able to provide reliable and robust inter-personal connections between future mobile devices. But just as in today's file-sharing p2p software, the functioning of such a network depends upon the resources shared by nodes in the network. To which degree one shares is a choice made by the user. This paper investigates whether social factors play a major role during a user's decision to share. To this end, an informal explorative study was conducted with the aim of the study was to understand factors that motivate users to share. Results of the study suggested that Social Visibility is a major factor for both sharing and sharing less or nothing. Social incentives could prove to be a major incentive to share, but it might have the opposite effect and lead to a decrease in sharing if implemented the wrong way.
