The paper identifies the work breakdown structure (WBS) as a technique that can be used not only to identify, estimate and schedule work activities but also to manage and motivate the project team members to ensure high levels of motivation and performance. The author discusses previous research into the motivation of IS professionals and links it to the use of the WBS to manage and motivate project staff. The ongoing management difficulties of setting personal objectives and appraising performance using traditional performance appraisal processes are addressed and, by using the work breakdown structure technique in conjunction with motivation theory and personality characteristics, the author proposes ways for the project manager to improve performance and increase motivation levels of the information systems project team members.
