With the release of the Standard Performance Evaluation Corporation's (SPEC) System File Server (SFS) Release 1.0 benchmark suite in April 1993, the characterization of NFS server performance grew from a small and not widely accepted set of benchmarks, to a single industry standard benchmark. This paper will provide a historical look at the success of SFS 1.0 [Note 1] and how it has driven server capabilities, describe SFS 1.0's shortcomings, and detail the design and rationale behind the development of SFS 2.0.
