Abstract

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department at Western New Mexico University has developed a CS0 (Introduction to Computer Science) course that introduces computer science fundamentals. We have noted that students who take this course are primarily from our two-year Networking Technology program, education or social science majors while a smaller percentage are planning to continue their education in CS. As a result of the student's varied entering background and degree interest, a broad-based course was necessary. This paper discusses the development of the CS0 course at WNMU's Computer Science department. While the main focus of this course is to prepare our learners for the next course in the Computer Science sequence, the CS1 course, the CS0 course introduces several key computer science and programming concepts are introduced including variables, identifiers, addressing, searching, and an introduction to algorithms. This paper introduces WNMU's background in developing the CS0 course, the course goals and strategies and highlights items on our course syllabus. The intention of this article is to provide an initial forum for other schools considering the implementation of a CS0 course in their Computer Science curricula.
