Abstract

We present a computerized method for reducing inflected German words to their stem. The German language has many possibilities of inflecting words (nouns have case endings, endings of adjectives depend on case and gender of the noun they belong to, . . .) Therefore it frequently happens, that an inflected word can be reduced to more than one stem. In this case all possible dictionary entries, to which the word can be reduced, are stored and the final selection can only be done by semantic means. The program is written in PASCAL and runs on a 16 bit machine.
