The widespread use of distributed computing systems has raised the importance of understanding the design and analysis of distributed algorithms. The distributed paradigm introduces several new issues and problems not present in traditional, non-distributed algorithms. Although many of these issues are well understood and researched, most of the textbooks on distributed systems often present these topics in a rigorous fashion making it difficult to quickly assimilate the basic issues. In this paper we introduce the fundamental issues and situations specific to distributed algorithms in an informal way with the goal of an easy appreciation of these concepts.
