Capturing requirements engineering knowledge in the format of patterns enables knowledge transfer at the level of practical experience. The authors present four patterns for basic RE activities that have been successfully applied in projects. They also propose patterns as a general vehicle for sharing RE experience and describe an analysis method for deriving patterns from observations. Practitioners can use this method as a basis for building an online pattern repository to make patterns available to project leaders on the job.
