Abstract

The MYCIN System is a large INTERLISP program designed to assist physicians with the selection of antibiotic therapy for patients with bacterial infections. The nature of this clinical problem, the details of the program's design, and its methodology have been described elsewhere . In this communication we discuss some problems of 'real-world' implementation for this kind of system. Although we are dealing with the problem of designing a high-performance AI program for the somewhat atypical world of clinical medicine, a number of the issues we have addressed may be common to other task domains in which expert systems are to be used by individuals who are not necessarily computer sophisticates.
